site shows directory listing

Hello when I finish installing the site shows the cmsmadesimple directory and does not load the index.php. When I click the directory cmsmadesimple the site loads normally. I have tried creating symlinks and changing apache's doc root but no good. I am running debian woody with apache 1.3.26 any help ideas suggestions greatly appreciated thanks in advance
