Beginning and Ending Date Function

So Im at work playing around with CMSMS. I go to lunch and I bring the manual with me. Okay, stand down everyone, I know this is an exciting life but bear with me a minute.
Okay, back to reality. I read in the manual that the News module has the function of being able to set a starting and ending date the article would be available. I love this. However, is there a way that it could be done or I could do myself in moving or copying this function over to the content section?
Now I realize I could use the News section and if that would be a better way then say so and I'll just do that. However on my business web site I would like to have on the main page main content that is up for just short periods of time.
However I would like it right there on the main page for all to see as the come to the site. If possible I would also like for the visitor to see the expiration date of the content. That would be so that you could do something like "Sale on Widgets" as perhaps the heading or greeting and then next to it "Expires: 02.02.2006" which would be pulled from the expiration date that was set.
Anyway, I'll stop rambling. I was just working some stuff out in my head so I can plan out what Im going to be doing to the site this weekend. Thanks for your patience and help.
