verticle css menu too wide

I have a photoshop template that I'm trying to use. The place where I want the verticle css menu is 191px wide. When i put the menu there the template breaksk apart. I've narrowed the problem down to the fact that the verticle css menu is extending to 200 px. If I try to make the menu narrower - like to 189 px, the children in the menu do not extend far enough to the left to connect to the main menu, and the gap results in the children disappearing before the cursor can get to them.
How can I make the css menu narrower? The widest text for the menu is less than 150 px wide, so I don't need the menu to extend to 200 px, but if it doesn't, then the menu won't work? Is there a way to either "shove" the children to the left so they connect with the parent links or is there a way to make the children "linger" longer to give my cursor enough time to reach them?
