"Site Down..." - preserving content while re-installing?

I started using CMS a few days ago, the install went smoothly, I've moved in all my content, had prepared all my templates and stylesheets offline and was starting to try them out tonight.
As soon as I tried to preview after the first template change, everything went blank except for the text "Site down for maintenance". The admin section kept working perfectly, so I reverted all my template/style changes to the backups, and even tried reverting the default page to the one that comes with CMS, but no change. I've found the suggestions to run install/upgrade.php (tried it, but was already running version 0.11.2), cleaned the cache (via the admin panel) and removed tmp/SITEDOWN manually.
So (unless there's more things to try) - is there a way to reinstall while preserving all my painstakingly uploaded content? Do I have to start a new database, or clear out the current one to use it again?
rrrrrrr!
