Products Module - Hierarchy sort order

Hey up. Cheers to everyone that helps on this forum, ive only just started with this kinda stuff and this place has been a bible almost eveytime i hit a problem. but unfortunatly i have now had to sign up and ask a quick question as i cant find the answer anywhere else.
I would like the hierarchy order to be displayed in the order i enter it in, but for some reason it does it random. any clues?
Ive tried sortby='hierarchy_id' etc but im not sure i was putting it in the right place.
any help would be appreciated
