News Module & Smarty tags ?

I cannot seem to get smarty tags to work in a news article.
When I link to the page by adding a link in the main menu the smarty tag works, however, when I click on the news article link from the homepage where my news is displayed the Smarty tag does not work.
it seems the page is interpreted differently depending on how I link to it ?
