[solved] file manager: can't upload files using firefox

i've run across a major problem. while i can edit content/add news items, etc using firefox (v.3.0.3. on mac os x), i can't actually upload images or any other files (it keeps giving me a red banner error message saying that the file couldn't be uploaded). when i try doing the same thing using safari 3.1.2, it works!
now the problem is that the files i've uploaded using safari (as well as directories i've created in the file manager) don't appear when i use cmsms in firefox.
i don't want to use safari as it messes a few things up in the layout (and adds span tags in tinymce), so i need to get this issue resolved asap and go back to using firefox.
nothing in the setup has changed, and i've been using firefox all along, so not sure why this is happening all of a sudden?
any help would be very much appreciated.
