Front endusers

I installed the front end users module

And got a problem directly,
firstly all the templates included had \' in them with gives smarty errors, so this had to be replaced by just a '
easy enough to fix, second problem is a bit more difficult,
When I click on a news link in my installation I get the following error
Warning: preg_match() [function.preg-match]: Unknown modifier '\' in C:\Program\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\htdocs\cms\index.php on line 129
this has something todo with hiearky since all the top level content pages work, but when I click on a news link or a content page that is below another in the hiearky I get this errror (i.e /page is working and /page/subpage is not working.
This error is caused by front end users module, since everything goes back to normal (working) when I uninstall the module.
any ideas?
