You may want to use the custom lang. file trick to get the calendar to stay inside...

In calendar there is a lang file in the lang folder, us_EN.php copy this and lines 110>116 you change the abbreviations to single letters or what you need, then in calendar tag call the new lang file lang="us_EN1.php" and you have single letters for the days...
