Image Resizing/Manipulation/Auto thumbnail

I have a client that is provided with professional photography and they have full rights to use the images. The photos all have meta information containing copyright, when, where, who, etc... For some reason, their images do not play well with CMSMS at all. I can upload them but I'm unable to resize them and when I do upload them, no thumbnail is auto created.
I thought it might have something to do with them being high resolution (300dpi) but I have tested other high res images and I'm able to work with them just fine. All photos are provided as JPGs and the color mode is RGB.
I've experienced the same issues with these photos provided by the same photographer using other open source apps (CuteNews) using GD where I can successfully upload them but I cannot resize or manipulate them. I HAVE been able to work with these photos in Gallery2 where thumbnail and resizing work just fine.
I tried removing all meta info and re-saving a photo and then uploading but that didn't make a difference. So the issue definitely seems to be related to the images themselves.
If it matters: the issue has been persistent since v1.2.3
Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks.
