Tiny MCE WYSIWYG disapeared [SOLVED]

Deleting my post because it contained a link to a live site is one thing but then saying in the same sentence that nobody is providing enough information is a joke...How much more information can anyone give but a link to a site that has this problem?

OK, I'll give as much information as I possibly can.

The client called me and said, " I can't edit my website, there's just a load of gobbledegook in the content and the icons are missing"

I check the admin section and the WYSIWYG had disappeared. So I make sure that TinyMCE is selected, WYSIWYG editor is selected...yep! Today I updated the site to 1.2.5 and still no joy. I've checked with multiple versions of IE and firefox on XP, XP64 and vista and it doesn't work.

Nothing has been modified by the client or myself and my host (Dataflame) says that everything is ok at their end.

As said in the original post AND in the README FIRST posts, and in numerous sticky posts.

Did you check your error logs?
Have you looked for javascript errors?
Have you turned on debug mode and checked for any errors, notices or warnings?
What version of TinyMCE are you using?

Why should I have to ask people these questions?  Web developers should know to look for errors before filing a post, and they should know better than providing a vague uninformed post.

I did a search and the only thread that I managed to find which had the same problem was the previous one...which wasn't solved so I resurrected it rather than post a new thread.

The only vaguely helpful thing in that thread was to check the logs and it didn't come from you.

Checked logs...nothing.
Haven't noticed any javascript errors although TBH I wouldn't know where to look.
I don't even know how to turn on debug mode, there's no reference to it in the docs that I can find
TinyMCE - 2.2.7

b1 is the only one in the modules list, I'll have a search for it, thanks.

I found a thread explaining how to run debug mode and have attached a text file with the very long list of errors I get when going to edit a page

[EDIT] I've updated to b4 and still no joy.

How did you install b4 into your cms?

downloaded it and copied over the files to the server.

I have found this entry in the docs:

Problem with the Toolbar

If the TinyMCE toolbar does not appear when you are editing a page and the content appears as plain text or HTML, first check that you have actually set TinyMCE as your editor (see above).

If you have corrected this and it still does not work: in some cases (as with the OVH hosting provider in France) you will see the checkbox Turn WYSIWYG on/off, yet the toolbar does not appear.

If that is the case, do not frantically re-install CMSMS; you only need to restrict the access right of the modules directory to 555 or, to 755 and it will work. In other words, you must at least remove the write access right for the rest of the world.

first I restricted just the TinyMCE directory with no luck but I've changed the modules permissions to 755 and it now works.  ;D

Hello,
biliousfrog wrote: ... attached a text file with the very long list of errors I get when going to edit a page
There are :

Code: Select all

Error (0): <br>
which means there is zero error.

Thank you for sharing this solution. I'm sure there are other posts about modules permissions and Tiny and 755; yes it is not easy to guess the right keywords.

I agree with Calguy1000 that is your customers pays your bills and you expect free community support you should gather a lot of information about the issue and the context before posting here.

I totally agree and I tried to find the problem and solution for over a week before posting here. The reason that I went through every step in the process and eventually added the solution is because this problem has been discussed several times on the forum yet none of the threads had a solution.

The solution was added to the docs but nobody would think of looking in the docs because most people would only do that when they first start playing with CMSMS. I only happened to find the solution because I was double-checking how to install a module manually. So despite being treated like an idiot (which I am), I am the only person to actually offer an English language solution to this problem in the forum.

As for things like running Debug mode...even after CalGuy suggesting it I had a hard time finding a way to do it despite searching the forums and the docs. I eventually found a brief mention of it buried in a thread.

The final thing I'd like to point out is that this neat little application is called CMS "made simple". There's a lot of snobbery on here suggesting that this application should only be used by seasoned web developers. Well, I dabble, I don't create websites for a living and CMSMS has allowed me to offer a much better website with much less maintenance in a much shorter time without having a PHD in HTML, MySQL, PHP etc. So when a problem occurs it is often difficult to know where to start. Shouting things like "check the logs" and "run debug mode" are only helpful if people know what the hell you're talking about so perhaps a sticky should be created detailing exactly what people should be looking for....then, if they still ask stupid questions, by all means shout at them.

I just find it odd that people are encouraged to try a "simple" CMS system which doesn't require extensive knowledge of coding but are sneered at when something breaks.

We don't as a general rule 'sneer'.... but get irritated by people that can't even read the 'README FIRST' posts on forum rules.  I regularly watch people register for an account, login, then immediately post a stupid question.  How can people call themselves 'Web Developers' when they can't even read.

Just because the package is named 'CMS Made Simple' doesn't mean that this is a replacement for frontpage or microsoft word.  It's a package designed by professionals to make it simple for people who know what they're doing to build small-ish semi-static websites relatively easy.  Many of these people say that it is 'Simple'  These are the people we are aiming at, and these are the people we try to keep the forums 'clean' for.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.  In order to install and administer a CMS system of any sort (not just this one) the user has to have a certain set of knowledge.  We're not here to teach that.  This system is not for the average accountant or iron worker, or my father,  uncle or grandmother to use.....

We're not here to teach people MySQL, HTML, CSS or even smarty.  We expect them to have the ability to read, and to learn indepandantly.... and to find out (without having to ask here) what error logs are.  We are also not here to answer questions on how to determine your database host name, or how to do a database backup, what a 'permission denied' error message means, or how to find javascript errors, etc.  Infact, if people don't know how to find most of the information requested in the rules and guidelines in order to post.... then they probably need to get a professionals help off line, or spend some time with google.

I completely understand that. All I'm suggesting is that there's a sticky explaining how to get the information required for a successful error report.

I know a little HTML, CSS, Java, PHP, MySQL etc. mostly from playing with CMSMS, reading through various online resources, magazines, books and forums. I've learned much more since using CMSMS than when I used Dreamweaver exclusively and every time I learn a new piece of code or little "trick" I'll make a note of it. If I get stuck I'll research until I hit a brick wall and then ask on here.

It's only when a problem happen's that most people will look for a solution.

So the point I'm making is that if there were threads for us simple folk...threads that explained how to do basic error reporting in a way that the 'Web Developers' might understand...there might be less 'irritating' threads clogging up the forums. Because unless you make CMSMS more exclusive there are going to be a lot more stupid questions from people with far less experience than me and you're going to be very busy.

Think of it as potty training rather than just hitting a kid every time it pee's in it's pants.
