Best way to pull data from a 3rd party DB

Hi There,
Just wondering what is the best way to do the following?
I am wanting to integrate 5 CMSMS sites with an external DB. All sites will be identical in terms of structure, version etc. Can i use a smarttag, user defined tag or content block to pull info from the external db and display it in a template / page?
the data will be slightly different on each site so i will need different select statements based on which site its for.
So basically i want to create a page in CMSMS. Use a tag in the content to pull DB records from a 3rd party DB source.
