Apache ownership

I believe this is a different issue to the one discussed under "A desperate story"
In an attempt to find a user-friendly solution to backing-up and restoring databases I have had to delete a CMSMS installation several times. Unfortunately, when I try to delete certain files/folders using ftp access is refused.
On contacting my service provider I am informed that I cannot carry out the deletes because the files/folders were created by "the system" (Apache) rather than by me or jointly and that a simple script would resolve the issue.
As someone who hasn't written any code since the demise of the Commodore Pet and Sinclair ZX81 - I'm out of my depth!
