In regards to the above about the future of cmsms using php 5.2 - is this still something we need to consider still since cmsms 2 is likely not coming out until later... Will cmsms 1.2.3 etc still be supported in terms of security fixes?

The problem with upgrading is this is from the host:

"The upgrade of PHP is not an easy one due to the many parts of the LAMP stack it integrates with. During an unsupported upgrade (compiled from source, not a package from the upstream provider) there is a significant risk of sites being down and displaying raw PHP."

How would you even go about doing this if you have many sites on a dedicated server (with different Open Source apps). You can't shut all the site down for the upgrade and hope all the sites will work after...

So does cmsms not care as much to the userbase and just hope that follower will change host? Just want to know ahead before getting in too deep in cmsms...

Hosts, as always have to run a change management protocol.

a) Notify users of intended changes well in advance
b) test the procedure in a testing environment and make sure that their upgrade procedure works
c) continually remind users of the upcoming changes
d) do effective backups (incase of disaster)
e) perform the upgrade according to the tested procedure.

This is a normal business practice.... it happens all the time (do you still see hosts running RedHat OS7.3 or Fedora Core 1 or PHP3) and is nothing to worry about.

And yes, the 1.2.x series will continue to be maintained at least for security releases for some time after 2.0 comes out.

The host also said this when I asked about upgrading to 5.2.5.
CentOS is the same code as Red Hat Enterprise Linux and with a distribution of Linux designed for enterprise use, the latest software releases are not available, due to lack of stability and security testing.
So right now I only have 5.1.6 (which they had to still add patches for) which is a bummer and it has to work with Plesk urrgh. I have a DS, but still worry that it will mess other things up.

I guess at least 1.2.3 is supported after, then I'll have to continue using that...or I don't know...just bummed... :-\
