Is Upgrading Necessary?

I have recently began managing a site that is running version 1.0.2. Is an upgrade absolutely necessary and/or what are the risks of running the old version, if any? Hopefully a fairly simple question and thanks in advance for any help.

Besides numerous bug fixes and enhancements, there are a few security fixes that IMHO make upgrading 'mandatory'.
