I'm not of the dev team.
May be a quick and less "dirty way to password protect pages by alias" which "Works with pretty URLs too" would be to use the webserver dbauth features : it wouldn't modify CMSms at all. But a better way is demonstrated in the visual tutorials about front end users (FEU) and custom content (CC). It is not slow too.
