The Circle School - suggestions, please

Hi all - after reading a few posts under this topic, I thought this might be the best place to ask for suggestions.
I am helping move an elderly site, http://www.thecircleschool.org, to CMS for delegation of some content to non-techie people. The content will be mostly static, so CMSMS is simply perfect. The hacks needed for "staticizing" the dozens of other CMS packages I have tested can be quite ugly - this feature of CMSMS should never change, in my opinion!
The test site is at http://circleschool.pbandjelly.org for your critique and suggestions.
One of the things that folks like about the old site is the "warm feeling" of the greens, etc. I prefer sparse, but that is me, so some design suggestions would be most helpful, so that I might find a good balance of compromise
Yes, the file size of the images in the pages are large - that is first to go - I just dumped the higher res ones up there, and will scale them down soon.
Thanks!
