moving cms-ms to other server: problems expected??

I have to move a site to another hosting provider. A part of this site had a CMS-MadeSimple  -old version 1.0.4, installed in a subdir.
I've read the info in other postings about best moving-porcedures
So, made a back-up of the dBase with php-MyAdmin at the old server and also backups of most of the modified CSS-files and templates! However, wasnot able to ftp/download all the cms-files in the subdir's at the old server in time (the moving of the domain between the old and new server went much faster than expected)...

I prey I dont'have to do everything again from scratch now, please

1. When I install at the new server the most recent CMS-MS version 1.2 (again in a subdir) and import de dbase-backup of the old version, is that going to work with the new version anyway??

2. Also, do I have to install themes, templates, modules and plugins again?
If so,  firstly, before importing the dbase-dump, or after ??

3. Or wil this not work at all??

Could some one please be so kind to advice

Thanks much!

Willemijn

Hi Mev,

Moving CMSMS to a different server shouldn't cause any problems if the servers are configured similarly. If they are not, the only problems I can think of are lower limits which usually wouldn't cause too much hassle anyway.

In answer to your questions:

1) NO! Importing an old database to a new version will cause chaos. You should install cmsms 1.0.5, run it's install/ updates, and do it for all versions after that up until version 1.2. If you don't, trust me, your website will only be viewable in error messages.
2) Not if you follow my advice in 1).
3) This will work.

I hope this helps.

Peter

PS - all releases of cmsms are available from http://dev.cmsmadesimple.org/frs/?group_id=6.
Choose the releases:
cmsmadesimple-diff-1.0.4-1.0.5.zip
cmsmadesimple-diff-1.0.5-1.0.6.zip
cmsmadesimple-diff-1.0.6-1.0.7.zip
etc.

Mev,

if you still have access to the old environment, you might want to use SitePusher, which is intended to do a full move to another server.

Thanks a lot Peter, I suppose I should import the old dbase-dump right after the install of version 1.0.5? (although it's a dump from version 1.0.4....)
Nevertheless installing/updating all these versions after one other, looks like a LOT of work.. (??)
maybe faster to simply use my other backups (in plain text-files) of the modified CSS-files and templates from the old server into the newest cms-ms version?
