Photo Ablum without GD

Hi,
I really like the photo album module and would like to use it on the site I'm developing, unfortunately the host doesn't have GD enabled and it doesn't look like they will enable it either.
It seems the album use's the GD library for the thumbnails only, could this be made an option and make the thumbnails from smaller alternate images if GD isn't available?
I think everything else works.
