Duplicate menu numbers

Hi, I have a problem that I am unable to figure out and was wondering if someone could help???
In the list of my current pages, the numbering of the pages contains duplicate entries, i.e. two different pages, both numbered as 2.2.
If I remove one of the duplicate entries, the pages are renumbered, but there is always one which renumbers itself as a second 2.2 entry. (This is the case for 2.2.1 also). The rest of the numbers are fine.
