Everything centralised in IE, but not in FF

I've been developing a template from scratch, working in Firefox, but when I tested the site today in IE, all the text is centralised.

I presume it is in HTML, not the CSS:

HTML:

Code: Select all

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<!-- saved from url=(0014)about:internet -->
<__html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" lang="en">
<head>
<title>{Title}</title>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
{stylesheet}
{metadata}
</head>
</__body bgcolor="#c8c8c8">
<div align="center">
<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="900" summary="Page layout is controlled by this table">
   <td><img src="images/spacer.gif" width="7" height="1" border="0" alt="" /></td>
   <td><img src="images/spacer.gif" width="649" height="1" border="0" alt="" /></td>
   <td><img src="images/spacer.gif" width="237" height="1" border="0" alt="" /></td>
   <td><img src="images/spacer.gif" width="7" height="1" border="0" alt="" /></td>
   <td><img src="images/spacer.gif" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" /></td>
  </tr>
  <tr>
   <td colspan="4" background="images/Ripples_r1_c1.jpg"></td>
   <td><img src="images/spacer.gif" width="1" height="169" border="0" alt="" /></td>
  </tr>
  <tr>

   <td bgcolor="#FFFFFF" valign="top">{menu template="Ripples"}<div id="main"><h2>{Title}</h2><br />{Content}</div></td>

   <td background="images/Ripples_r2_c4.jpg"></td>

Hmm I put that in because without it, the table itself shoots to the left in FF

I have also tried align="center" in the table syntax.

Try using CSS to center the table or body, margin: 0px auto...

Sorry, I'm awful with CSS - whereabouts should I put that?

I edited the margin line in the body tag, but still nothing (nothing scalable anyway)

Sorry for being such a noob  :(
