Advanced Menu Help

Figuring this out is the difference between a finished product and a failed attempt so all help is appreciated.

I have a "main" nav menu with an "about us" tab that contains 3 child pages/nodes.  I'd like to set the navigation up so that when a user clicks on the "about us" tab...they are directed to the about us page which includes a horizontal sub-menu containing the child pages associated w/ "about us".

Heirarchy -

Home
Products
About us
  - Location
  - Mission Statement
  - Staff
Contact Us

I would like the menu to appear as follows:

HOME | PRODUCTS | ABOUT US | CONTACT US
Location - Mission Statement - Staff

Initially, I thought that I could just include a menu, include it and assign subpages to it...looks like that's not possible so I could REALLY use some guidence on how to make this happen.  Hard coding is not an option as the client wants to have the option to add pages (easily) to the submenu.

Hope this makes sense and thank you for the help;)

Do you mean you want a second menu-call with the parameter

Code: Select all

start_level='2'
Like the "Top simple navigation + left subnavigation + 1 column" does. It calls the menu twice and pushes the children of the selected parent to the second menu-call.

{menu collapse="1"}
{menu start_level="2"}

Style them the same as in float:left...

Thanks guys for your replies!

@mark - I took a look at your demo site (link in sig) and that's pretty much the effect I'm looking for.  My question is...is it possible to create the same within a horizontal layout?  Reason I ask is that the css for the "main" nav menu is entirely different from the sub menu.

The main menu spans the width of the page with each link appearing as a tab,  but the sub menu isn't "tabbed" and is left aligned.

I have the entire layout finished except this "issue" so help is appreciated!

This is single {menu} tag with horizontal second level, you just have to have enuf page/menu width to have a lot of second level, or long text, items...

http://multiintech.com/cmsms1.1/school.html, note no second level unless hovered, then if on a second level they show as in...

http://multiintech.com/cmsms1.1/extensions/modules.html

If you want second level shown when on parent I'm sure it can be made that way...

We're getting there....

I used RonnyK's suggestion using the template he mention:

    {menu template="top_nav" number_of_levels='1'}
    {menu template="top_nav" start_level='2' collapse='1'}

which gave me the proper layout/structure.

Now I'm struggling with the css.  I need to style the sub menu as a simple "pipe" separated horizontal menu like this:

itemOne | itemTwo | itemThree | itemFour

Any idea as to how to style the submenu differently?

If you make a copy of the menu template for the second menu you can put the | in it after the but then you will need some way to take it out of the last one...

SCORE!!!!!!  It works...almost:)

Everything is exactly the way it should be EXCEPT:

When I click on one of the child links, the "active" status of the parent disappears.  Active meaning the background of the active tab is different the rest.  If I can make it so that the parent "tab" remains active even while on child pages...my life would be complete.

We'll maybe not my life, but my week would be much improved!

Thanks for the help!!

Does your menu template have a call for menuactive and menuactiveparent?...

Or does the CSS have any calls for them?...
