Could SafeMode be the reason for some modules/combinations not to work?

I had news/comments working as a combination on 1.0.2, I also had Blogs working on 1.0.6. My hosting-company switched to a higher release of PHP/SQL, and now I find some combinations not to work. I don't know if it is related to the SafeMode, but I can't figure out why scripts that I had running, now don't work anymore.
Does anyone have a clue why these aren't working, or any ideas....
