help using search to create a jump menu filter

Hi all,
I am in the planning stages of a new site for my design portfolio. I am planning to oraganise my content by type, ie print design, web design etc etc, HOWEVER, and heres the question:
I would like to be able to filter the work by different criteria, so for example, if a user wants to see everything done for one client, which may have results from several sections, then they could choose an option from a drop down menu which would run a search for specified criteria corresponding to key words i would have placed, and return results which i would style as a menu.
Is the drop down menu pre defined search mechanism possible with the search module, and if so does any one have any pointers for me? I am more css / xhtml than php but happy to dig away at it as long as i know i am not barking up the wrong tree..
Thanks in adavance for any help.
