navigation question

Hi all,
I'm just looking for a little help with the navigation of my site. I'll do my best to explain what I'm after...
I'm would like to use a normal, vertical nav for the main menu showing only the top level pages (which is no problem). Then for the second level I thought the 'list_children' nav would be nice. (for example; 'portfolio' would be in the main vertical menu and when clicked on the second menu pops up, somewhere else on the page, with the project titles and a short description). All fine so far but, when you click on any of the projects the 'list_children' style menu is no longer present (for obvious reasons), so you have to go back to the portfolio page before you can view another project. I want it so the second menu stays there all the time.
So I tried the 'generic_sub-menu' which does what I want apart from adding the little description in the sub menu. Is there anyway I can have both?
