FrontEndUsers - User Limits

I read somewhere in help documents that FrontEndUsers had a upper limit to the number of users (I believe this is 250). Is this a hard ceiling or can this limit be increased (perhaps doubled)?
I have a site that has just under 200 users right now. The number is likely to grow to about 400. At any given time, the actual number of active users is likely to be in the single digits with peak usage of perhaps 10%.
