You should never upgrade on a live site anyway. I always clone a site do upgrades on that first test everything is working then copy back to the live site.

It is also much quicker and better if you do it on the command line using SSH access rather than (S)FTP including database dump. Depends on your hosting arrangement as to what level of access you have. I run my own servers so it is not an issue.

I would make a copy of the site in a subfolder and do the upgrading there to figure it out...

Re: That depends on how you reference certain elements, often I use i.e. /images/etc

Which if you use sub folder won't work. Fail safe is a different virtual server.

I've never had a problem with any moved sites in reference to image paths...
