Do the tmp/cache and tmp/templates_c directories have proper permissions?  By that, I mean writable by the web server.  (or 777 for the lazy like myself).

Stup kindly let me have a look with FTP and here is what I found - any ideas anyone...

Ted I tried the 777 on the tmp and subs but to no avail.

In CMS you can open admin, but you cannot edit pages. Error 500.
I can set an .htaccess file, but wonder of there is anything set in the root or a parent directory that may effect this?

Other thoughts...
I note the host has the Zend Optimiser enabled, not sure if this will have any effect. Plus an odd version of PHP?

Stip could try upgrading to the new beta?

Other than that I'm pretty stumped - other than the obvious 'it's your ISP config'.
Do they have a help line?
Can you set a to a different version of PHP in your .htaccess - sometimes you can.
Just trying to elimate things.

It could be stup's isp - coz I'm on the same host!!

Which server are you on, stup? I'm on colo18 with the site that doesn't work, but I have a Joomla site that works on colo15, and Joomla don't work on this one either.

So to me, it's looking like a server config issue, but their support hasn't been much help so far...

I'm on colo18 too. Maybe I can ask them to move me. Will try.

This should you do:

500 Internal Server Error

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or
misconfiguration and was unable to complete
your request.
Please contact the server administrator,
webmaster@eyes-down.net and inform them of the time the error occurred,
and anything you might have done that may have
caused the error.
More information about this error may be available
in the server error log.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found
error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Apache/1.3.34 Server at www.eyes-down.net Port 80
The problem is the same no values in contentcache.php

The problem is solved, well, sort of solved. ;D The hosting company UK Host 4U have a number of boxes all running the same PHP/MySQL stack but evidently still containing some differences in configuration. I was on colo18 and it didn't work. I remembered that I have access to a couple of their other servers and tried a fresh install on colo17. It all works as it should. The server stats are attached.

I will chase it up with UK Host 4U as it appears that colo18 is broken in some way. Thanks limestone for suggesting that one.  ;)

Will let you know the outcome.

Big thanks to Russ for putting in the hours on this one and everyone else who chipped in.

Here is a message from the ISP...
The colo18 server in which your account resides is based on 64bit architecture as apposed to 32 bit. This significantly improves handling times for people browsing your site. We can move your account to colo17 or another 32 bit server if you would prefer.
I guess that explains it.

How did you go on with UK Host 4U?

Did they agree to move your account to another server, coz if they did, I'll be following you!!

Yeah, they said they would swap me, and it all happened in hours. You get a 32 bit machine instead of a 64 bit one so it may be a bit slower, but that doesn't bother me.
