OK Kitch, then I misunderstood you. Rolf also mentioned the Theme Manager and also Archiver was mentioned, so I thought there were already 3 suggestions. Anyway, I hope you get it done.

I'll explain it again.

It turns out that both Archiver and Revisions do not work after the fact. Obviously, that is not useful.

Theme manager does not work for News module items, as mentioned before:
News templates will have to be copy/pasted to save, no export function at this point...
I hope this brings you up to speed.

Have you tried the externaliser module? I can't recall if it does play nice with news module templates - but it's absolutely awesome.

I use git, and this module, with hooks that dump the database every time I commit - the work flow is by no means perfect, but it protects me from myself :)

Most modules including those like the News module, allow you to create a new template which uses the default, original one.
Some module templates will also have a 'Reset' option that brings the template back to its default, original state.

That reset idea is an interesting one. I checked thru the News module and found settings there that could be reset to defaults. However, it did not fix a problem I had.

All I can assume is that I changed something somewhere in a template or style sheet that I don't remember. I am sure I need to get the old ones back. I'll probably have to try the export import idea given earlier as the solution for now. I just wish there were a way to uninstall News and then reinstall without losing all my news items.

But a great idea, none the less.

Thanks.
