Actually there are some core modules missing in that list. I bet there is an old module breaking both front-end and back-end, since the list is too short. I would venture peeking admin log to see if there is any hint about errors. Also the server php logs may have errors. If all that fails to give a hint you could try CMSMS debug mode and see if some error appears at some point.

PS: I'm not sure since which version FEU is dependent on CGExtensions, but you may have to search for missing dependencies on your modules before upgrading....

I'll add that I can see from responses so far, this is above our skill level already. The site was orignally set up by a third party, and obviously, untouched since then :) We intend to hire someone that knows CMSMS to repair it.
