Solution of additional problems for the benefit of others:

$config['root_path'] = '/home/xyz/public_html';

contained spaces before /home when it was pasted in from somewhere else. However, after fixing this links did not work yet. Cleared cache and all links started to work. Remember to clear cache on config.php (database or path/config changes) changes.

Michael, its rare to find someone on any forum prepared to go so far out of their way to help a newbie.  I can't thank you enough or recommend you highly enough to anyone looking for fast and professional help with CMSMS. Any Joomla sites I will of course keep for myself (plug plug) but when it comes to CMSMS, Michael is the man.
