Yeah, I've done upgrades from 1.0.2 to 1.6 before with no 'unexpected' difficulties
(had problems with the News content type) but that was it.
So somewhere along the way your database has been corrupted.
I'd still suggest reverting to a known good backup, and testing that it works properly
then proceeding through the upgrade slowly, verifying each step.
