Alby was trying to help you out by getting you to run the checksum. That would in fact tell you if all of your files are there and if they were properly updated or if they were corrupted in the process. There are hundreds of people that have done a full 1.5.3 install (myself included on at least 3 occasions) without much problem.
We have no reason to believe it is CMSMS because you have not yet proven to us that you do in fact have all of the files uploaded and that none of them were corrupted in the process. Because of your TinyMCE issue, it seems logical to assume that is the problem. Judging by your past this is not a new issue for you... I've noticed that you have had other problems because not all of the files were uploaded.
Please do a checksum and report back with your results. If your checksum comes back clear, I will eat crow and admit I was wrong. But you have to prove to us first that everything is there and working properly. We can't support something that is missing or has corrupted files.

Re: Smarty Error in Step 1
1. In Download page there are these files:
If you download xxxx-full.tar.gz, download also xxxx-full-checksum.dat
where xxxx is cmsmadesimple-version
2. Uncompress xxxx-base.tar.gz (or xxxx-full.tar.gz) only and upload to your server
3. Start with install: calling with your browser http://xxxxxxx/install/index.php?debug=1
4. In Installer step 1 (Checksum test), press browse, search and select in your PC xxxx-base-checksum.dat (or xxxx-full-checksum.dat)
- Press Test
- Checksum test run and DISPLAY your files/folders error
5. Look which files have problem and re-upload this files/folders
6. Retry from step 3.
I have a problem and I don't arrive to see Checksum test, ok no worry!
a. Upload from your PC in root of your server installation the file: install/cmschecksum.php
b. calling with your browser http://xxxxxxx/cmschecksum.php
c. Checksum test run and DISPLAY your files/folders error
d. Look which files have problem and re-upload this files/folders
e1. Retry from step b.
e2. No errors? go in installer to step 3.

Re: Smarty Error in Step 1
I had the same problem as you described in your first post, never had a problem like this on any install of cmsms and it was the same server I use for all of them, a folder under my main site...
string(117) "Smarty error: [in install1.tpl line 19]: syntax error: unrecognized tag 'cycle' (Smarty_Compiler.class.php, line 590)"
I just kept going and it all works just fine, I believe the cycle thing is just for the images/numbers thing at the top...

Re: Smarty Error in Step 1
Thank you for your comments.
I have just learned it may not be either of us. (See I too am willing to eat crow if necessary).

There have been router problems in the area where my servers are ... and given that my data is going from MN to GA it is possible that this is the issue.
I am going to learn how to do the taz install at the cpanel level and try that.

j4 - That will be your best bet, but it is also faster too
I'd still like to see your checksum results

Solved: Smarty Error in Step 1
So here's an update for all who are reading.
I need to eat crow myself as the tar.gz upload via my cpanel / file manager did work.
Note: the SMARTY error was never solved, I decided to just go thru without dealing with that which was what stopped me in the first place.
But, it is clear to me now that this tar.gz uncompression process via cpanel is indeed superior to FTP and I will use it now always in the future.
The smarty error is not showing at my live site, so I am just going to drop that. I may at some point follow the posted directions to upgrade within CMS:MS to 2.6.2 but hopefully I can do that through the modules manager.
I have spent almost 5+ hours on this install today ... I would like to thank alby for his help even though I ultimately went another direction.
Thanks again.

Re: Smarty Error in Step 1
Just ran checksum from Admin after the install:
1 Files Not found
Files Not found:
./tmp/cache/SITEDOWN
2 Files failed md5sum check:
./tmp/cache/index.html
./tmp/templates_c/index.html

Re: Smarty Error in Step 1
Fixed those errors and ran it again:
All checksums match those in the uploaded file
Thanks again for all of your help. I have learned new ways of doing an install today and this feature to check my files.
I do appreciate the help.

Re: [Solved] Smarty Error in Step 1
Had the same problem on a new install of 1.6
Error was caused by the config file.
Removed the config file and restarted installation
PS. The error only seems to effect the images cycle
