I'm having the exact same problem as you are. Sometimes the pages will load quickly, sometime they will take 10-20 seconds. It's erratic.
then
I agree with others, it must be our host's mysql. Is there any way to benchmark it? I think I may have to move to a VPS and configure it myself otherwise.

Small update:
I called up my Host yesterday and complained about the long loading time. They checked the server and confirmed that the server it was on is a very old server that was being replaced very soon. I asked them to put my site on a new and fast server. I haven't had alot of time to test it yet. But from what i've seen today everything is running nice and smooth. Getting 0.1 sec load times
So if you have the same problems as me i'd suggest you contact your host and ask them what kind of server your site is on. I know alot of the cheaper hosts tend to fill up their servers...maybe a little too much. Or you could be on an old outdated one like me.
The server i was on was an old php 4 one. They also upgraded me to php 5 but. Not sure if that matters as they said it shouldn't affect the speed anyways.
Anyway, very glad to see that it's not a cmsms problem...atleast not for me. Which still allows webnoobs like me to design proffessional webpages.
