Permissions problem

Hi

I have installed CMSMS onto a new virtual server hosted by streamline.net. I get permissions errors unless I set the directories specified in the install guide to CHMOD 777. I want it set to 775 or 755. How can I fix this? If it can't be resolved, what are the security risks of 777?
