CMSMS 2.0 (say what now?!)
Re: CMSMS 2.0 (say what now?!)
Permissions...
Login to the backend from a page...
Lowest backend level...
Being able to edit only the page you were assigned and nothing else, no parent choice no moving it around in the menu, unless you make or are assigned a section or a parent page, no list of additional editors...
the ability to login from the page itself takes you straight to Content Edit page mode where you can upload files/images that only you and the main admin can see, no other low to mid level admins* have access to them, and still have a shared main upload folder that everyone can access...
the ability to let this level access their own section of News, Albums, Calendar with the ability to access the calendar from it's own page for adding date/schedules...
again only top level admin has access to your files/folders here...
*Next level up...
You have the ability to handle your own Group of Lowest level backend users, access to their files/folders and main shared files/folders, News, Albums, Calendars ect....
No permission to add modules...

Re: CMSMS 2.0 (say what now?!)
Wow Ted, your 2.0 plans almost gave me a hard on
A few questions pop to mind:
- How about upgrading from 0.13 to 2.0, is this going directly or via any of the 1.x versions ?
- What about support for the old way CSS and templates were done in 0.13 ?
- Will it still run on PHP4.4.x or do I need to upgrade all my servers to PHP5 to run it (I know this will not make friends for my users that run PHP4 only scripts on my servers).
Anyway, I'm truly exited by what you plan to do so for what it worth don't let me keep you from coding
Thank you (and the rest of the team) for a great, relatively lightweight and Bubba proof CMS and have a great, healthy and prosperous 2007 everone !!

Re: CMSMS 2.0 (say what now?!)
The thing I love about CMSMS is that it doesn't force you to do things the way it thinks it wants things to be done. The basic core of CMSMS is that, if you know how to deal with HTML and CSS to some extent, you can get a lot done fairly quickly.
Where it falls down is all these modules and add-ons. Honestly, I've just spent three days that (in retrospect) would probably have been better spent trying something else or writing my own code. Or maybe even just writing static HTML, I think I would have gotten further that way.
I would appeal to the core developers, if they are thinking about 2.0, to ask themselves what it is that they really want to achieve with this product. The ideal (IMO) would be something that someone with a few savvies but very little time to waste could use to achieve really useful things.

Re: CMSMS 2.0 (say what now?!)
I'm a little confused. Are you saying that you don't like the modules and add-ons that are already created, or are you having problems developing or extending modules and plugins? Is this a problem with how modules and add-ons attach to the core, or is this a problem with particular modules and add-ons? If the core works fine for you, you might want to get involved directly with the development of modules and plugins, rather than criticizing the plans for the 2.0 core.
Re: CMSMS 2.0 (say what now?!)
I apologize for the tone of my earlier post. I've removed a few bits.... Perhaps it would be clearer if I simply asked what benefit end-users see from the changes? To take the default roles of Administrator, Designer, and Editor, here are some things that would benefit them:
Admin
* Multi-site administration. I have nine (I think) sites on CMSMS and counting. A better way to manage this would be fantastic. At least half of them are still on 0.13.
* Ability to assign ownership of pages (and their sub-pages) to specific individual editors.
* "Bridges" for other programs like e.g. SMF and Wordpress
Designer
* A way to share template parts. Like e.g. the top of the page
* A way to share templates across sites, with a few customizable bits for each site (logo, etc)
* A customizable News-type module where you can define the fields you want to show up for each category
Editor
* Ability to edit a page in sections. Like MediaWiki.
* A faster editor. Like... um, the one I am using right now (bbcode)
* A sandbox for contributing authors to write an article and then submit for publication
Thanks, I hope this is more helpful. My perspective is someone who uses the software to set up a site and then gives the site owner an account so that they can update and manage the site themselves. Some people jump right in, but most find the interface a little intimidating. A couple can't even use FCKEditor (Mac users with older machines, that Firefox won't run on). Most have some trouble dealing with the formatting and I have to fix it in the HTML. My worry on reading the above posts is that this isn't going to get any easier.

Re: CMSMS 2.0 (say what now?!)
I really admire the inspiration, patience and motivation the CMSMS team has to put this beauty together. All changes lead to something even bigger, so keep 'em coming! Can't wait to check out a BETA of 2.0.
Good luck!
Good luck!
Re: CMSMS 2.0 (say what now?!)
That's great Ted! This release is gonna bring a lot to this tool already efficient.
I'm waiting for the full page caching system with a huge pleasure!
But what about a "true" multilingual system (especially on the files tree) that could be very useful to manage a several languages website?
Thank you and I wish a good year to everyone, with a lot of CMSMS websites!

Re: CMSMS 2.0 (say what now?!)
Ted, you and the team ROCK!!!!!!
I continue to be impressed by the whole forum of people who go out of their way to help each other with kindness. This is one of the best forums I've participated in - thanks everyone!
And please - give some Karma to Ted and the developers, and Mark [Template Guy!] - they deserve it.
One eeniteeniweeny suggestion I have is ...
Can we have the ability to COPY A PAGE we have already created?
That'd be so cool!
Thanks Ted! I am sooooooooo excited!

Till version 2 you can use my cache tag:philight wrote: I'm waiting for the full page caching system with a huge pleasure!
http://dev.cmsmadesimple.org/projects/cache/
In combination with an event on every page change it works likewise.
Re: CMSMS 2.0 (say what now?!)
Actually, that would be very easy now. I always had put it off because it was a coding nightmare for something so simple...WebGirl wrote: One eeniteeniweeny suggestion I have is ...

Re: CMSMS 2.0 (say what now?!)
That's all fantastic news for that already excellent product.
Congratulations and big THANKS.
One request: please keep it compatible with windows hosting, like the 1.02 I enjoy.

As long as your host supports php5, you should be fine.patdelux wrote: That's all fantastic news for that already excellent product.

Re: CMSMS 2.0 (say what now?!)
Some proposal....
I made some search on the forum and about pagination I always found about splitting the text of a single page (i.e. for a long news) on more than one page.
What I would like is to have an automatic pagination for for module results, like:
* news in category
* search result
* other module present and future that need pagination to show results
I know that for the news there is a trick to do it with a user tags, but the result is far from being good.
You do not have any idea on how many pages are shown
you can't jump forward or backward or accessing directly to a page
the link is shown also on the last page resulting in an empty page
I guess that this would need the creation of some new API or a new core module
Somewhere I read about managing more sites from the same installation as a feature of the 2.0 version (maybe I was wrong, but just in case...)
In this case would be nice some modification to the news module.
each news should be inserted with basic info, like (just to give the idea):
generic category/topic (just for filter search purpose in the publishing phase)
title
resume
body
in this way a news repository is created, then from each site an editor can chose in which category of that specific site the news has to be published, the dates and so on.
This would split the news table in two parts.
This would save a lot of time from inserting the same news several time on each different site
I hope I was clear.
Another last functionality/cosmetic note. In the perspective that the permission are going to change, try to keep in mind a better interface to handle them. Actually when you have many module installed the permission manager screen get very confused. Already in the actual system (maybe the change can apply already to the 1.0.3 or to the 1.1) would be nice to have the permission divided by modules (just the module name in bold and the related permission indented under it)
