Gallery: Image orientation

I have images shot in portrait orientation, but the EXIF-data says: "Orientation: Rotate 90 CW"

In the gallery images are displayed as thumbnails. The thumbnails are in portrait orientation, even though the EXIF-data says otherwise.

When the image is opened (lightbox) the image is rotated clockwise as per EXIF-data (displaying a portrait in landscape orientation)

So, what is correct? The thumbnail or the opened image?

Apart from portrait or landscape format, are images upright? Or do you need to bend your head to be able to view them?
