FEU Login page and protected pages

Hi,
Finally got to the point and found the time to upgrade 1.11.11 to 1.12.2.
Planning to upgrade 2.x after successfully have 1.12.2 running.
Under 1.11.11 some how the "old" fashion of a login page way still worked well under 1.11.11.
I've created a new page and used the {FrontEndUsers} tag instead of the old way (although the "old" way still seem to work).
Both ways result in having a login page where no text boxes nor the captcha picture appear.
Has anyone an idea where to look for to solve this inconvenient behaviour?
