Forge Cleanup
It is long overdue, and some poor souls on the dev team have volunteered to help, so... we will soon be purging some dead projects on the forge.
Soon means We will be starting in 48 hours or less.
We will be looking through the list of dead projects and evaluating them. if they seem dead (like 2 years dead), they will be PERMANENTLY removed from the forge. There will be absolutely no restorations from backup.
So here's your last chance. If your project still works, make sure that you release a file... NOW.

Re: Forge Cleanup
by 'evaluating' I do not mean that we will be installing them and testing each and every plugin. it just means that, we'll be looking and if it seems like (based on our experience) that this plugin looks like it MAY work with CMSMS 1.9.4.2 with little or no problems, that we will think about not deleting it.

Re: Forge Cleanup
Will you be posting a provisional list before deleting them to allow us to intervene on any of them?

Re: Forge Cleanup
Nope... if they're dead, they're dead. it's obvious. We're not gonna let this process drag over a week or more, and then risk never getting done.

Re: Forge Cleanup
The deal is:
If you have projects on forge - take some minutes to see if any looks stale.
[hint]
If some look stale and you know they not are. Make them "live" by committing file(s) or similar...

Re: Forge Cleanup
Hi,
Will your first, and only, filter be the flag on each project 'stale or not'.
So for example project 'GoogleMaps' has now the status 'stale'. If as an admin I go to the project and I turn the stale status off, will that buy me time?

Re: Forge Cleanup
yeah we'll look at the 'stale' flag too... so if the developer has toggled the project to 'not be stale'.. the project wont' be killed... other than that, the criteria is (pretty much) file releases, with small considerations given to commits.
If the project hasn't had a release or a commit in 2 years, it is going to be deleted unless, for example, it is a 1 file plugin that does something simple and is unlikely to be broken.
Let this be a lesson to all you people that think 'things should be done differently'... shut up lest you have to do it yourselves.

Re: Forge Cleanup
Oh thank god!!!
I have been thinking about what I could do to help sort out the old, no longer projects from the ones that work and are useful.
Any change of adding some sort of rating to modules? Can't tell good modules from not-so-good module. Only thing we can go by is the download count... not always so useful...
Thank you guys for all your work!!

Very subtleit just means that, (...) , that we will think about not deleting it.

Re: Forge Cleanup
One of my projects (Job Scheduler) had the status of stale. Since I think that pseudo cron is a better solution, I have no motivation on keeping it up and running.
So from the forge I used the option to delete the project. It comes back with multiple warnings if I was sure. Yep, I was/am.
Indeed after that delete, it didn't pop up anymore in the forge.
However when opening Module Manager (CMSMS vs 1.9.4.1) it still shows it.
Who is in control to remove it from there?

Re: Forge Cleanup
Thank you!
Will the projects with "No files" be removed also. Very annoying to search for a module and find no files. Why does that happen anyway?
I really like the rating idea. But this is a big job just cleaning it up.
Thanks again.

Re: Forge Cleanup
Yes, projects with no files will be the first to go.
After that, we'll be taking a hard look at the ones that have had no releases for 2 or more years.

Re: Forge Cleanup
Will a backup be created of the whole Forge JIC?
I know you said you will not base this on whether an installation of that module works. But I have already tested this some time ago, and placed my results in one place:

Re: Forge Cleanup
That happens because a developer (usually with good intentions) creates a project on the forge, does some work, commits some code... but never finishes. Therefore the plugin/module/document aren't ready for public consumption. Will the projects with "No files" be removed also. Very annoying to search for a module and find no files. Why does that happen anyway?
