Newspaper Site

Post by applejack »

This is a site for a newspaper and uses CGBlog module in order to assign articles to multiple categories which also has a bespoke category search facility.

I wonder why nobody said anything to this nice website.

I think this is a brillinat integration of the blog module and everything seems to works fine.
Kudos to you for the search intergration! However you did this... WOW! I never used it but now I have to take a look at blog.

I think, this is how such a site should look like, even if I get a little lightheaded from all those blinking ads, but this is just my personal weakness...

No... great site, really!

Hi klenkes

Thanks for your kind words much appreciated. I always wanted to try and see if CMSMS could cope with doing a newspaper site and also but it gets updated regularly. I did another site which is one of my favourites that I have made and in more than 2 years the client hasn't updated it once http://www.goringberry.com  And yes I agree about the ads but that is managed by the client.

Good looking site, Applejack. Newspaper sites definitely have a certain "look" to them and you've absolutely nailed it with the layout and typography. Congrats!

One small observation: I was curious why the two lead stories under the CRE banner are images and not real content?

Hi Deak

Thanks for the appreciation.

Re:  I was curious why the two lead stories under the CRE banner are images and not real content? It is managed by the client so they can link the banners to wherever they wish.

Excellent site!  ;D

Really shows the power of CMSMS when you know what you are doing.

Very nice work!

Since I own an online newspaper and need to switch to a more modern CMS, I have some questions:

How much visitors can CMSMS handle? How is the performance with, say, 10.000 visitors per day?

Do you use the standard news system? If so, how does it cope with, say, 30.000 articles? Can it manage such numbers?

I had always the impression that CMSMS was more for medium sites, but I would gladly use it for my newspaper if there were some positive reports from really BIG sites.

Cheers,
Alex

Hi Re coping with big sites. As for the amount of traffic whether or not it can cope with it is more to do with the server capacity. For the number of articles this is to do with how much data MySql or Postgres can hold which as far as I know both can but I am not an expert in that field.

The issue you may have using CMSMS is workflow management as CMSMS is not really set up to cope with a large number of contributors / admins as far as I am concerned though someone may wish to correct me on that.

I worked on a newspaper site that used news module but instead of writing the articles in cmsms it pulled them from the newspapers own DB and inserted them into the cmsms news DB...

Very nice site, I am very impressed. That is great to see you really using CMSMS to the extreme.

I viewed your code and have a question, why did you decide to use the CGBlog for the news articles rather than the news module?

Also, did you customize the search module to be able to search categories?

RE: why did you decide to use the CGBlog for the news articles rather than the news module?

Because articles needed to be assigned to more than one category which new module doesn't allow.

Re: category search yes this was an addition because even though the help notes for CCBlog and Search say you can set up searchable categories it doesn't work. For further info and the code for this see my post http://forum.cmsmadesimple.org/index.ph ... 167.0.html

Deak

Sorry I thought you were referring to different banners. The ones underneath the masthead to use a newspaper term is for sizing and layout as it is easier for a client to make them look as they want that way. I would have preferred to have it as real content.

Hi!

How do you handle the size issue with the pictures? Do you use the auto-generated thumbnails for the teasers and the "original" images for the article?

Not knowing the CGblog module, where does it store the picture files? I am asking because a directory with several thousand files will run into problems. WordPress, for example, stores the pictures automatically in a new directory according to year/month.

Cheers,
Alex

Fair enough; whatever the client wants, of course. :)

Images are resized using the Supersizer plugin. Images are stored in directories created by the client though CGBlog can be set up to create directories for each article.
