[SOLVED]News links not working with mod_rewrite or pretty_urls set turned on

I have an interesting problem.

My news links will not work on my site if I have mod_rewrite or pretty_urls turned on.  Once off the links work as expected.  This is happening on my dev site but not my production site that are hosted on the same box.

Any troubleshooting ideas? ???

I just wiped my dev site and will rebuild all the work that I have done.  Unfortunately not much time to play around.
