Change list page design for category

Hi all!

How can I use smarty on the Product List template to say "if i am a category list, print this... if I am a hierarchy, print that... if I am undefined print the other"?

Alternatively, if you know how to say "count each unique category/hierarchy item in this list" - that may work too. Then I can say if cat>1, don't print any image. Not ideal but would get the job done.
