CGSmartImage auto processing

I'm trying to get the automatic image processing feature for CGSI (1.22.2) to work in CMSMS 2.2.7. I've uploaded some large images - ~4000px x 4000px to /uploads and /uploads/images, activated the feature with 1024px as the limit, and hit apply.
In the Admin Log I just get:
Failed converting /sitepath/uploads/images/filename.jpg
But no detailed information, and nothing in the php error log. I was getting some php memory limit errors so I've increased the limit and those have gone away, but the admin log errors still happen.
Using PHP 7.1, everything is up to date and green checkmarks across the board in system info.
