Internet & Intranet Setup

I have a client that is requesting a redesign on their website to make it a little more 21st century compliant, but they're also exploring the idea of implementing an intranet for internal communications and document sharing between offices. Essentially they want a multi-page, public facing website, and an access point to collaborate and share information internally.

Can anyone give me some insight on how a configuration might look for both intranet and www domain setups? Is this something that CMSMS is capable of handling? Would this just be an IT configuration through domain redirects and access controls? I'm a bit new to the intranet side of things...
