File permissions issue with Theme Manager - please help!

Help with getting the CMS CORE package up and running. This does not include 3rd party modules, PHP scripts, anything downloaded via module manager or from any external source.

File permissions issue with Theme Manager - please help!

Post by jwellis »

Completed a clean installation of CMS MS and changed file permissions to allow write access to folders as usual. However when trying to import a template in the 'theme manager' I keep getting the following error (see below).

WARNING: You have insufficient permissions to upload or install themes. This may be due to the permissions on the uploads or modules subdirectories, or Safe mode may be in effect on your server.

The folders were showing as write enabled in the FTP client and safe mode is not enabled on the server but the permissions issue still remains!!

Any suggestions would be very helpful, many thanks.

John.

In install the item:
"Checking if the httpd process can create a file inside of a directory it created ... " was green?

Hi Alby,

Yes it was green. No problems with the install it seemed. Infact I did a re-install to check this wasn't the issue. Downloaded fresh files from CMS MS site.

Thanks John.

Is a good chance the uploads/images folder needs a permissions change, happened to me a few days ago, FTP to site and check uploads/images for it, if 755, change to 775 and if that doesn't work then 777...

I have the same problems.
There were no problems during installation
With FileZilla  I set CHMOD of uploads/images for subfolders and subfiles to 775 and that didn't solve the problem
According to my hosting provider it has to do with safe mode being switched on.
I cannot switch it of myself and have requested my hosting provider to do it for me.

[[SOLVED]: File permissions issue with Theme Manager - please help!

Post by LouiseW »

Safe Mode was not the problem, so I searched on.

Finally I found this:
http://wiki.cmsmadesimple.org/index.php/User_Handbook/Installation/Quick_Install

As I have an Apache environment I CHMOD-ed these directories to 777:
  • tmp
  • tmp/templates_c
  • tmp/cache
  • uploads
  • uploads/images
  • modules

All files in these directories I set to 666.
FileZilla is a very useful tool to do this.

And now the File Permissions Issue with Theme Manager are solved.

However, I still would like a 'listing' of preferred CMHOD settings for all the CMSMS folders and files as I'm not happy with 777 settings of folders.
With one level less, so 775, the problem returns, also with File Manager and Module manager.

Setting permissions to 755 is best but not all servers will let you do this, like I posted earlier, start at 755 then 775 then 777, it turned out to be your server likes 777 only so you will have to stick with it...
