CMSMS + Bluehost + Free SSL?

Post by postiffm »

Hi, I have CMSMS running on Bluehost. Wondering if anyone out there has set up SSL so it works with CMSMS on Bluehost. They offer a free SSL installation for Wordpress (I think through Comodo) but I don't know if that will work with CMSMS.

Rolf, in my experience $config['root_url'] and $config['admin_url'] are not required for https to work fine, so do they really need to be added as your page suggests?

Actually setting up SSL is not tightly connected to the applications running on the web server.

Of course CMSMS has to be 'configured' to use SSL (actually latest versions will do without any hassle). Forcing https using the .htaccess example from Rolf's link should be enough.

And no, I don't think it is required to set the root_url and admin_url in config.php. But doing so will make CMSMS generating the SSL links without the requirement to set it up in .htaccess. In that case search engines are likely to index the https pages, but if a visitor uses a (manually typed) http url it will work too. Still the CMSMS links and menu will generate https urls.

Note that latest versions of CMSMS use protocol-less url's (if any) in config.php

Setting 301 redirects in .htaccess is all I did when enabling HTTPS early this year, and it's been fine. The only non-db statement in my config.php is the timezone. Admittedly I don't know if more extensive configuration was necessary in earlier CMSMS versions, since my host only rolled out free Let's Encrypt certificates this year.

I was half expecting some mixed-mode HTTPS messages when I enabled it, but none whatsoever (so credit to CMSMS devs for that!).
