New requirements for CMSMS 2.3 and beyond

Post by calguy1000 »

Hello folks.

As developers of a major open source Content Management System, we have numerous ongoing tasks. One of those tasks is ensuring that our software stays current with emerging technologies, and the technologies we use. This includes the operating system(s), databases, programming languages, libraries and utilities we use. Just like how security issues and bugs are fixed in new releases of CMSMS, the same applies to MySQL, PHP, TinyMCE, Smarty, and other packages that we utilize or require.

Of course, like others, we have to manage that with our resources, and with our release policy. Therefore, we try to only adjust the major packages and requirements on feature releases, and not maintenance releases.

To that end, CMSMS 2.3 will be tested and work with the latest released version of PHP at the time of release. Right now that's PHP 7.2 ... but since CMSMS 2.3 won't become widely available for some months, that may change again.

Additionally, we will be changing the minimum PHP requirements of CMS Made Simple to some version of 7.0 or perhaps 7.1. This will allow developers to implement changes to better improve the stability, performance, and functionality of CMSMS.

From the user perspective, PHP 7.0+ provides very significant performance increases. It is worth it to use PHP 7.0 NOW if you can.

If you aren't using PHP 7.0 or greater for your applications yet, now is the time to make that change. If your host does not support PHP 7.0. then it's a good time to talk to them to make sure that the company you pay money to serves your needs properly.

When will CMSMS 2.3 be released? We have no firm date yet but are hoping for a beta program starting in the Spring of 2018.
