hexDJ if you looked recently a light box module has been added, maybe something like that can be done with thickbox talk to calguy1000 or take a look at the code

yes you would need custom content, install that through module manager and either follow the help information there or follow the tutorials that calguy1000 linked you to.

did you try taking a look at that specific menu template? see if looking on that line in that template helps, possibly some type of code wasn't closed properly or an invalid smarty tag was used.
