It was issues with the components. Once I removed the smarty tags the page loaded fine. Sorry I had left a post to say this but it doesn't seem to have gone live. I have an outstanding issue with the uninstalling Calender installing CGCalendar which I have started a new post for. thanks for you help.

Thanks for encouraging me to take the plunge and try the upgrade again. I now have 1.10.3 installed. But on the home and the events page for some reason the <head> is not loading. it goes straight to the </__body> tag thus... no stylesheet. I've made modifications to the templates to now include {cm...

That's really interesting. I think progress has been made to a point. I have now a 1.9.4.3 working.
