Thank you - that was the answer to the problem!
I deleted the .htaccess file in /uploads firstly and that solved the problem. Deleted the same file in /images also just to make sure!!
All up and running again on the newer version.

Hi Just a quick note of thanks for your time on this one. I have stripped all the files off again and gone through the procedures again and have got it working.
